Ever since I saw Devils Tower the first time, it has been my dream to climb to the top. I was finally able to do it July 25, 2001. I was the first of the day to summit the Durrance Route with Frank Sanders. It was the greatest feeling standing up there looking out for miles in all directions. Frank helped me to feel comfortable the whole way. I have never climbed with anyone who has more a love of climbing than Frank. He makes it look so graceful and easy. In the afternoon he took our whole family to the North side and we did some toprope climbing. He was very encouraging to all. Our 15 year old son was very excited by being able to climb the tower also. He didn't go to the top this day but says he'll be back, and the next time he'll be looking down from the summit. While at Devils Tower we stayed at Frank's place, Devils Tower Lodge. Our rooms were extreemly clean and nice. We did not use the hot tub, but our son spent time in the gym with a trainer lifting weights and climbing the walls. Looking out the living room window was a view of the tower. It must be wonderful to see that every day. One of the things that was really enjoyable was that while climbing and walking around the tower Frank would tell us some of the history of the routes and who climbed them first. I feel very lucky to have met Frank. He is an important part of the history of Devils Tower. Frank, thank you for making our vacation unforgetable.
Sincerely, The Stubblefield's Jay, Jody, and Lee
