Up until last week, I was a gym climber. I had one, very limited experience with outdoor climbing on a very short rock face a few hours outside of Philadelphia, PA. On Monday, August 20, I got the chance to experience my first real climb on Devil's Tower. At 4 AM that morning I set out to climb the tower with my husband, a friend, and our guides, Frank and Gene from Devil's Tower Lodge. I was both excited and terrified (I learned that I am more afraid of heights than I once thought), but Frank and Gene were great climbers and they were very safety conscious. We started climbing while it was still dark, and by late morning we had reached the summit by way of the Durrance Route. It was an excellent choice for a first multi-pitch outdoor climb and Frank and Gene were the perfect guides. This is one of the best vacations I have ever taken.I had so much fun that I hope to make the transition from the gym to the outdoors as soon as possible.
