Devils Tower Trip Report (#1665)

Summitted on the Durrance with the Bailey Direct finish on this cool, crisp April day. Frank Sanders, guide and mountain host extraordinaire, nudged me gently up this challenging and exhilirating route -- my first experience with extended crack climbing. At the top we had a beautiful view of the forrested and terraced basin in which the Tower sits; the Little Missouri Buttes, geological brethern of the Tower off to the west, are a handsome feature of the landscape. As we lounged at the summit a "micro front" came over the Buttes and we rappelled down the eastern side of the Tower in a gentle swirl of light snow. Words hardly express the magic of this exemplary piece of rock -- I can't wait to get back to it. The Bailey Direct is the preferred alternative to what must surely be an anti-climatic scramble up the traditional finish to the Durrance. All in all a terrific climbing experience.
