Devils Tower Trip Report (#1634)

John Holt and I snuck up the Wiessner route during a lapse in the rain. We had tried to climb this route a couple of times last summer, but the sun conspired against us...this time, the solar reflector-phenomenon worked in our favor--the wind was cold but the rock was warm to the touch. Got my knee stuck while leading the burly offwidth Wiessner Crack--ended up hanging on a Camalot to free myself. D'oh! Then we raced to the top, snapped a couple photos and headed down. Very cold on top! It began raining again just as we made it to the car. The next day it was so foggy that you couldn't see the Tower from the trail--climbing was out, except for some cool (and dry!) boulder problems on fallen columns. Then I went to the visitors center and stared at the collection of gear that Wiessner donated after his ascent. I had enough trouble with sticky rubber and monster cams--this guy did it with soft iron pitons and canvas ked-lookin shoes with hemp rope soles. Made me wonder how he got the wheelbarrow for his balls up there...
