First things first .... everything is bigger in Texas; except, the rocks. Most of my experience has come from rock gyms and single pitch, less than 100', top roped face climbs. Needless to say, this is not the complete skill set required to climb the Devil's Tower. Fortunatly, we found Frank Saunders, and friends, at the Devil's Tower Lodge. Frank took my friend Joshua, and I, out for a "play day" on the tower that adventuer filled, and packed with teachable moments. The following day, we climbed "El Cracko Diablo" to the summit of the Devil's Tower. It is now the beginning of October, and because of this experience, I am more motivated than ever to climb. (I will compete for the first time at the end of this month). My reccomendation to anyone interested in climbing the Devil's Tower is to give Frank a call. You will learn more, climb better, and have more fun than most states allow by law. I am sure that the other guide services in the area are good, but Frank, and the rest of the Devil's Tower Lodge crew, are the best. When I return to the tower, I won't settle for any thing less; especially from myself.
