I can see the headlines now: "Fat (260), Middle Aged Guy (45) with Bad Knee and Shoulder (old rodeo injuries) Climbs Tower." I am the poster boy for non-typical climbers who have found their way to the top of Devils Tower. I would have to say that novice climbers are only as capable as their guides and that is why I thank Frank Sanders and his network of climbers who have helped me from the bottom of my heart.
Frank has a way of teaching you to relax and be comfortable when climbing. Although I must admit that getting to the top was my initial interest in climbing, Frank taught me to focus and feel great pride in moving up the rock 5 feet, not to be hung up in getting to the top.
When we reached the summit last Sunday I looked around in awe and wonder at the wide open Wyoming countryside and my chest swelled in size with pride. I knew I was going to make it, but at the same time I couldn't believe that I was actually on the top of the Tower.
I am a local so I didn't participate in the end of day activities at Frank's bed and breakfast found on the web at http://www.devilstowerlodge.com. I understand that the day usually ends with a great meal, great conversation and a dip in the hot tub.
I can old say that I have done a lot neat things in my life but this is one of the best.
