My former college roommate and fellow All-American Rifle Team member, Frank P. Sanders, Jr., took me up Devil's Tower the day before his wedding in July 1983.
We started just before another group and quickly left them behind. It was a beautiful day and quickly got very warm. I have to admit I was doing some serious praying to God after the first pitch or two and wondering what the hell I was doing there. Needless to say, it was worth it once we got up higher. He was a great guide.
Participated in the wedding ceremony the next day and then took off for the east. Did two thousand miles in two days by car, checked my mail and flew to Norway for an international rifle competiton. I've got some great stories that involve shots of vodka and water skiing in the middle of the night there. But that's for another time.
Did stop by and camp at Devil's Tower in mid-May 1998 on my "Great Western Auto Tour" and dropped in to visit Frank in Davis, CA a couple of days later.
I had also climbed with Frank and Mike Brown at Seneca Rocks, WV; Carderock, MD and Bee Rock near Crossville, TN in the 1970-72 timeframe.
Guess I'll have to drag my butt back there again soon. Sounds like they are having entirely too much fun to me. Happy New Year!
