Pieria Ori is said to be the mountain where the nine musas lived. Muses, in Greek mythology are nine goddesses and daughters of the god Zeus and of Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. The Muses presided over the arts and sciences and were believed to inspire all artists, especially poets, philosophers, and musicians. It is very easy to climb. The path is a part of E4 European path for long distances. There are many routes, but the shortest way to reach the peak, is starting from the village Velvendo. After three hours walking, walkers pass from the historical village of Katafigi, the village that Zorbas was born and lived, and the man that inspired Kazantzakis to write the famous novel. The highest peak Flambouro is four hours away from Katafigi. There is an excellent view from the peak; lake of Aliakmonas, mountain Olympus, Pindos range, even Thessaloniki can be seen. There are five refuges on the mountain. The most of them can offer a lot of facilities. A climb on Flambouro can be associated by a climb on mount Olympus, because Olympus is very close. From December to March, climbers may need an axe and crampons to reach the peak. Despite the paths are very good marked, some climbers have been lost because of the dense fog that eastern winds sometimes cause. There are not any difficulties on climbing. It is also good to visit the waterfall of Velvendo and the house of Zorba.
