Description
Mt Yulong is situated 15km N of the ancient city of Lijiang (busy in tourists season). The compact mountain group comprises of 13 summits, and has a glacier that reaches the lowest altitude of any glacier in China. The highest peak (Shanzidou) has not been climbed yet, albeit mountaineering teams from the USA, China, Japan and other countries have tried. The name of the mountain, Jade Snow Dragon Mountain, has to do with the jade-green color of some parts the snows on the mountain, presumably due to algae or minerals; and some think that the mountain looks like a gigantic dragon. Access to the summit is provided by a cableway, from the foot of the mountain to the Yuncaiping terrace. mountaineering/skiing equipment can be bought/rented in Lijiang.
