Aletschhorn

Description

The Aletschhorn is the second highest peak in the Bernese Oberland. It is a majestic isolated peak that rises above the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps. The glacier is fed by several large icefields and curves downward for sixteen miles, ending high above the upper Rhine valley. The magnificent beauty of this area has sparked tourist development, including hotels along the glacier. The Aletschorn rises above a small lake which borders on the Aletsch Glacier. The mountain feeds both the lake and glacier with its own tributary glacier. Occasionally small icebergs detach themselves and float into the lake. Because of the isolation of this mountain, its summit provides incredible panoramic vistas, as well as strong, bitter cold winds.
