Description

Pico Occidental is part of Parque Nacional El Avila, now Wuaraira Repano, north of Caracas. It is located in the limits of the states Miranda and Vargas, and it is the third elevation of both. It is also one of the twelve peaks that reach more than 2300 m. of elevation (using the criteria of more than 100 m. of prominence to the nearest col) in the central coastal range of Venezuela.

There are several routes to reach the summit, but the more popular one starts at Sabas Nieves guard house, in Altamira neighbourhood. The second point where this route divides is at La Silla; here, take left and climb through the crest that splits the northdern and southdern slopes of El Avila. It is a matter of 3 hours to reach the peak. There is a secondary heigh with a small difference in elevation...the first one you will encounter is the one you are looking for...no matter where the poster with the name of the peak is located!

Nice walk fellows. .
