Dove Crag

Description

Dove Crag is really the name of the impressive wall of rock that towers over Dovedale on the eastern side of the fell though the name has now been adopted for the fell itself. The secluded and beautiful valley of Dovedale is worth a visit even for non fellwalkers and is reached from Brothers Water near the Kirkstone Road.

As with neighbouring Hart Crag, Dove Crag is often climbed as part of the Fairfield Horseshoe but the approach along this route misses out the fell's finest side. In contrast with the grassy slopes overlooking the South and the West, the eastern ramparts of Dove Crag fall sheer towards Dovedale and by far the finest ascent route starts from here.

A good and clear path leads up through a breach in the cliffs and climbs this eastern side of the fell via a gully that is now ascended by a series of stone steps that have replaced the old scree slope which was loose in places.
