Description
Zwiesel can be reached from Bad Reichenhall in 5 or from the settlement Jochberg near Weißbach in 3 h. But I describe now the crossing of the whole group of Hochstaufen and Zwiesel, a very large and pretentious tour. Only to go, when weather is absolutely sure and not hot ! Except hut Reichenhaller Hütte no water !
In Bad Reichenhall ( 1575 ft) ask in the railway station for the head of the tour in suburb Staufenbrücke.
From Staufenbrücke on a steep and partially exposed marked path to Fuderheustein ( 4320 f )From here to the west to a path fork. If necessary way out over Buchmahd to Bad Reichenhall. Scrambling ( UIAA I) over the steep eastern ridge called Steinerne Jäger to hut Reichenhaller Haus( 5740 ft), managed in summer and early autumn. 7 h . From the hut in few minutes to summit Hochstaufen ( 5809 ft.). Pass the night in the hut and don´t forget to see sunrise on the summit.
Next day as early as possible descent some 650 ft on the normal way called Bartlmahd to a path fork. If necessary Bartlmahd is a way out to Bad Reichenhall. Now scrambling ( partially cables) over some secondary peaks , at last walk up to Zwiesel. If necessary way out from Zwiesel walking down to Jochberg.
Descent to west and further on to Gamsknogel ( 5740 ft). Descent from this peak a steep rocky slope to pasture Kohleralm ( 4756 ft). If necessary way out descending to Weißbach or Inzell.
From Kohleralm further on the pathes are not marked. Over a broad ridge to base of Gruberhörndl. Scrambling ( UIAA II) very exposed to Gruberhörndl ( 4897 ft). Walk down over a ridge southwest to Scharnkopf ( 4448 ft).Look from the summit in the dreadful northface of Staufengroup. Descent on a steep, partially exposed path to Weißbach an der Alpenstraße ( 2007 ft). 10-12 h from Reichenhaller Haus to Weißbach. If necessary pass the night in Weißbach . Return to Bad Reichenhall by bus or walking the very interesting Soleleitungsweg passing lake Thumsee ( 3 h).
