Sheol Mountain

Description

Sheol Mountain is located in the Lake Louise area of Banff National Park. Sheol is located one kilometer east of Haddo Peak, two kilometers south of Fairview Mountain, and five kilometers north of Mount Temple. Its position across the Paradise Valley from Mount Temple provides an excellent view of the towering north face of Temple. Sheol can be seen up close at Saddleback Pass, or from afar on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) east of Lake Louise Village . Sheol can be climbed in one long day.

Sheol Mountain was named for the gloominess of the Sheol Valley below the northest face which contrasted with beautiful Paradise Valley. Sheol (pronounced Sheh-ole) is Hebrew for the underworld, or Hades. Sheol Mountain is not truly a mountain because it is part of Haddo Peak's north ridge and has insufficient prominence to meet the definition of a separate peak. Nevertheless, it exists in spite of this.
