Description
Green Mountain is located above the Suiattle River Valley in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Its descriptive name comes from the vivid green meadowy slopes covered by waist-high wildflowers and ferns. A popular 4 mile trail gains 3000 feet of elevation to reach the summit which was once occupied by a fire lookout. The view from the summit provides a grand vista of the North Cascades including Glacier Peak, Sloan, Pugh, Whitechuck, Chaval, Buckindy, Buckner, Formidable, LeConte, Dome, and many more. In July the wild-flower show is at its peak. Expect to encounter steep snow below the summit in spring and into early summer so take an ice axe. The snow-covered slope provides a quick glissading descent with safe run-out.
Directions: From the town of Darrington drive north 7 miles on Highway 530 to the bridge and turn right on Suiattle River Road (Forest Service Road 26). Follow this road 20 miles to the Green Mountain Road on the left, and drive another 6 miles to the trailhead at road's end. Check road conditions for washouts.
