Description
Mount Murchison is an impressive massif located in Banff National Park. It is situated immediately southeast of the convergence of the North Saskatchewan River, Mistaya River, and Howse River. The scenic Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) skirts the west aspect of the mountain five kilometers south of Saskatchewan Crossing. The rarely climbed massif has 10 peaks made of Cambrian rock. The main summit has two high points in addition to towers with names such as Bison, Cromwell, Engelhard, Feuz, Gest, and Hall. Mount Murchison covers an area measuring 7400 acres. The mountain was named in 1858 for Sir Roderick Murchison who was director of the Geological Survey of Great Britain. Mount Murchison can best be seen to full advantage from the Peyto Lake overlook at Bow Summit.
