Description
Fortress Mountain is located in the beautiful Glacier Peak Wilderness. It is the highest peak in the Chiwawa Mountains, a sub-range of the Cascades. From the summit one has a commanding view of Glacier Peak to the west, Bonanza Peak and Dome Peak to the north, and the entire Entiat Range including Copper, Fernow, Seven Fingered Jack, and Maude to the east. Fortress is in the list of Washington's 100 highest summits coming in at 30. Fortress is aptly named, as the gneiss rock presents a fortress-like appearance when viewed from many perspectives, particularly when seen from the north.
Refer to Fred Beckey's Cascade Alpine Guide, Volume 2, for information on the established climbing routes.
