McClellan Butte

Description

McClellan Butte presents an impressive horn shape seen by travelers on Interstate 90 between North Bend and Snoqualmie Pass. McClellan Peak is located in the Snoqualmie River valley and can be hiked in one day on a 4 1/2 mile trail that gains 3700 feet. The final summit rock is a short exposed scramble. The trail crosses steep avalanche gullies filled with snow in the winter and spring. To get there from Seattle, drive I-90 to exit 42, Tinkham Road. Turn right at the exit, cross the S. Fork Snoqualmie River and drive 0.3 mile on Forest Service Road 55. Turn right at the McClellan Butte trailhead sign. The trailhead is at the end of the road.

McClellan Butte is named for George B. McClellan who was tasked with building a wagon road over the Cascade Range when the Washington Territory separated from the Oregon Territory. McClellan also ran on the Democrat ticket against Lincoln in the 1864 presidential election.
