Mount Williamson Summit Log (#8140)

We attempted the NE Ridge in early March '01 but were turned back after 3 days by too deep, unstable snow. The ascent was very slow going. Our high point was only 10,600 feet. Still, it was extremely beautiful, remote and interesting up there in winter. We found two choice campsites along the ridge (approx. 9,500' and 10,100') with fantastic views of the summit area, surrounding peaks and the Owens Valley. Several portions of the ridgeline required walking in snowshoes along an exposed, corniced, knife-edge. We saw evidence of bighorn, deer and mountain lions around the snowline under 6,000'.
