Mount Shasta Summit Log (#6998)

I summited Ranier the day before I did Shasta. I left at 3:45am from Bunny Flats, summited around 2pm, spent the night at Lake Helen and was down the next morning. The first day was too long and it is better to get to the top earlier than I did. If a guide tells you to turn back, turn back. Don't be macho and get yourself (and the guides) into trouble. Next time I would camp halfway up the hill and maybe bring skis to come down. Don't forget the sun block... the sun is very strong at altitude and off the glacier. Take walking poles. You need crampons and an axe, too. But you don't need to be on a rope team. Shasta is almost as hard as Ranier and just as magnificent.
