Description
Mount Hamell offers great scrambling for a day and normally takes 6-8 hours round trip. To get to the mountain drive drive 12 km north of Grande Cache and turn left opposite the gun range. Follow this to a signed trailhead. The trail starts wide and level through lush forest. Just before coming to the bank of hells creek it steeply climbs a rocky slab and forces its way up the nothern rim of the deepening gorge. Scrambling onto the ridge may be tricky. Continue up the ridge un til you run into a sandy colored scree slope crisscrossed with numourous goat pathes. Red markers should point you in the right direction. As you approach the north slope watch to the left for a marked route through the last pitch or karled sub-alpine fir. From here make your way up the steep but grassy slope to the summit.
NOTE: Avoid hiking from April to June as Tics are major hazard. On the Summit ridge watch out for the VERY STEEP CLIFFS that drop 200 meters or so. Bring lots of water.
