Description
Loolmalasin is the 3rd highest peak of Tanzania. It´s located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, in an area commonly known as the "crater highlands". Although the trek from the village of Nainokanoka to Lake Natron is becoming popular ( along with the trek up Ol´Doinyo Lengai) Loolamalasin is an exciting trek on the way. WE began from Elbulbul village and followed a faint trail for the first 200 m or so. Then you have to get well into the bush and look for the way. The rangers down in Nainokanoka told us about hte presence of buffalos and other wildlife on the way but we actually just saw several droppings and tracks on the first slopes. The actual summit is not the one seen from the village, but another one traversing to the left. WE measured 3825 m on that point, 145 m higher than in the most frequented "summit". There is a little cairn and a great look to the sheer drop to the Engaruka flats and the calderas to the north, weather permitting.
