Description
The highest peak in the eastern Olympics even though it cannot be seen from Seattle. It is located 1 1/2 miles NE of Mt. Mystery between Deception Creek and Royal Creek.
Mount Deception at 7788 feet is second highest in the Olympic Range, second only to Mt Olympus (7965 ft), however it is located in the rain shadow of the range and receives less precipitation than Olympus.
Mount Deception was originally named Mt. Holmes by the Seattle Press Expedition for John H. Holmes of the Boston Herald. Mount Deception was later renamed by US Forest Service worker G.A. Whitehead for the difficulty that mountaineers experienced in trying to find climbing routes on the often cloud-shrouded peak.
Refer to Olympic Mountains: A Climbing Guide by Olympic Mountain Rescue, or Climbing Washington's Mountains By Jeff Smoot, for information on established climbing routes.
