Troop 181 from Rye, NH is climbing the tallest peaks in NH, ME, VT and MA. We started with Mt. Greylock. After a long drive we arrived mid day to the Haley Farm site. No one was at the check in so we just parked and headed up the mountain via the Hopper trail. We hooked up with Sperry Road and found our campsite for the night. We set up our tents and pulled out our water filters to fill up the water jugs for cooking. There were fast running streams close to the campground. That evening the ranger came around to check on us and we discovered a really nice feature - they will deliver firewood. I believe the cost was $5.00 per bundle It's not often these days that you can have a fire while backpacking so bring along a bit of cash and marsh mellows.
The next morning we got up and after the leaders got their dose of coffee we headed up the Hopper trail for the summit. Traveling with just the basic "10 essentials" we made good time and arrived with the clouds. The view was limited to the tower, but we all had a sense of achievement from obtaining the summit. The road has been closed for re-paving so we had the summit to ourselves.
After reaching the summit we headed back down the Hopper to pick up our full packs. We took Sperry Road all the way to it's end to "Stony Ledge" which had some great views of Greylock. We then took the Haley Farm trail back down to the cars.
