Algonquin Peak

Algonquin Peak Summit Log (#12664)

I summited on Saturday, Sept 14, 2002 with brother Jack and friend John. We hiked a 14 mile loop from Adirondack Loj to lake Colden, up the back side of Alqonquin and on back to the Loj. We did it over two days, camping at lake Colden on Friday night. Bears got part of our food at Lake Colden and ruined trips for others who lost all their food. These bears are getting pretty smart. We hung our food using a steel cable but somehow the bear still got it. Fortunately I also had a bear canister so we had enough food to continue our trip. The hike up the back side of Algonquin was difficult with a 45 lb pack. John and I also took side hikes to the top of Iroquois and Wright peaks as well. We stumbled back to the Loj in the dark around 8:30 Saturday night. Thank God for headlamps! All in all a very physical and rewarding trip especially for three guys ranging in age from 48 to 51.
