Description
Though overtopped by a matter of a metre by Coniston Old Man, Swirl How is actually the central peak of the Coniston Fells and it is fom here that the ridges radiate outwards to each end of the group. Ascents can be made from Coniston, Little Langdale or the Duddon Valley with the greatest number originating in or around Coniston via the Old Man which is a fine outing returning by the Prison Band and Levers Water.
The fell's best aspect too is to be had from Levers Water which is overlooked by the steep eastern rocks with the subsidiary summit of Great How Crags appearing to dominate from here. The area to the North and West to Great Carrs and Grey Friar is worthy of exploration and provides fine views over the lonely country of Wrynose and the upper Duddon.
