Mount Katahdin

Mount Katahdin Summit Log (#8473)

Ascended via Saddle Trail with my brother, Paul, my two children, my friend Bob, and his son. Although we all had climbed Mt. Washington previously (some of us from multiple trails) we found this experience to be enjoyable but harrowing. The ascent was great. Good weather, nice views. The mountain clouded over as we approached the summit. My son was a bit scared on the Saddle slide. I was surprised because he had climbed Tuckerman the previous summer. We began our descent about 2pm. It was very foggy. Somehow we got on the wrong trail as we left the summit. We only noticed about 1/2 hour later because we hadn't reached the top of the slide yet. It was so foggy that we could barely see 20 feet. When we reached the intersection with the Abol trail I knew where we were. For fear that the kids couldn't descend the steep Abol, we continued down the Katahdin Stream Trail. It was a long but beautiful hike. We didn't turn around because we weren't sure we would have enough daylight. Got down just before dark and a wonderful camper gave me the long ride around the mountain to get my car. We were camping at Nesowadnehunk. Great hike. Careful with kids. Katahdin is a finely chiseled mountain.
