The Kinghans, locally spelled Da Hinggang or Na Hinggan Ling, are a forested volcanic range, extending 700 miles along the eastern edge of the Mongolian Plateau in western Manchuria, China. Several parallel subranges are separated by valleys from the main range, creating a long, narrow system 80 to 100 miles wide. The mountains tend to slope gently from the west, reaching moderate elevations of only 2,000 to 3,000 feet. Their eastern slopes drop off comparatively steeply, forming a steep backdrop to the more densely populated cities and towns of eastern China. Qiqihar is the largest city immediately east of the range.
