Sierra Madre Oriental ia a mountain range that extends southward throughout eastern Mexico, running parallel to the Gulf of Mexico. It averages 200 miles wide, but its mountains are relatively low, and without prominent peaks. Its highest peak is Cerro Pena Nevada (12,021 ft.), which is also well known for its caves.
Mexico's three highest peaks, all isolated volcanoes, rise south of the Sierra Madre Oriental, and are sometimes considered part of the Sierra Madre Occidental.
