Black Hills

The Black Hills are located in Southwestern South Dakota and Northeastern Wyoming, and are so named because they are blanketed so densely in pine forests, they appear black from a distance.
The Black Hills National Forest is best known for the sculpted tourist attraction Mount Rushmore (5,275 ft.), but the 1.2 million acre national forest is also home to an excellent stretch of forested backcountry, with plenty of hiking, rock climbing, and caving opportunities. Harney Peak (7,242 ft.), located here, is the highest point in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains.
Southwest of the forest proper, though still within the boundaries of the National Forest, Devils Tower (5,112 ft.) is one of the most treasured rock climbing destinations in North America.
