Ireland's island interior is a mostly level to rolling plain. Surrounding the island, however, are rugged hills and low mountains. On the west coast, steep granite cliffs rise directly from the sea, including a magnificent sharp narrow precipice called Slieve League (1,972 ft.). The coast is battered with strong Atlantic winds, and is prone to sudden storms. Ireland's highest summit, Carrantuohill (3,414 ft.), also rises near the coast in the remote southwest corner of the island.
