The Dinaric Alps are a mostly forested mountain chain running northwest-southeast along and parallel to the east coast of the Adriatic. It forms a natural border between coastal Croatia and its eastern neighbor, Bosnia and Hercegovina. Average elevation is 5,000 feet, and several peaks top 8,000 feet.
One of the area's most beautiful attractions is the Plit Vice Lakes National Park. Here there are sixteen clear, bright lakes descending from the plateau in terrace formation, connected by many waterfalls. There are also many ruined fortresses in the Dinaric Alps, evidence of centuries of war. Political instability in the region persists today, and hiking or climbing in the area is impossible.
